How many bits is a x86 instruction? The x86 is developed based on the Intel 8086 microprocessor and its 8088 variant where it started out as a 16-bit instruction set for 16-bit processors where many additions and extensions have been added to the x86 where it grew to 32-bit instruction sets over the years with almost entirely full backward compatibility.
filexlib. The x86 instruction set refers to the set of instructions that x86-compatible microprocessors support. On the x86 processor, instructions are variable-sized, so disassembling backward is an exercise in pattern matching.
What are those instructions? (a brief introduction to x86 instruction set). This part is based on David Evans’ x86 Assembly Guide.
The full x86 instruction set is large and complex (Intel’s x86 instruction set manuals comprise over 2900 pages), and we do not cover it all
How many instructions does x86 have? al. states that the current x86-64 design “contains 981 unique mnemonics and a total of 3,684 instruction variants ” [2].
The instruction pointer (%eip) and flag register (%efl) are not available as explicit operands to the instructions. The code segment (%cs) may be used as a

What does the x86 call instruction do? The CALL instruction performs two operations: It pushes the return address (address immediately after the CALL instruction) on the stack. It changes EIP to the call destination . This effectively transfers control to the call target and begins execution there.
